Queen and Slim
So, I finally went and saw Queen and Slim last night and it really didn’t disappoint as some critics said it wasn’t as good as it was boasted to be. I thoroughly enjoyed the many cultural and detailed Black nuances throughout the movie and how they captured the black community as a whole from one side of the spectrum to the other. How we eat, talk, walk, feel, and communicate with one another was put on display in a very detailed yet subtle way that it wasn’t just a “black” film, but it was, and one of hope and resilience. I took away from the film a lot of inspiration and admiration for lead role Daniel Kaluuya and how he bodied this role and showed a side of black male masculinity that you don’t see in having faith in god and destiny and being brave yet afraid at the same time. How the fear of police affects us all even if we aren’t doing anything illegal and how you are guilty until proven innocent in this country. A lot of his character I saw in me and many black men. As well as the role of Queen played by Jodie Turner-Smith and how she totally encompassed the black female’s strength and wisdom throughout the movie. Showing vulnerability and attitude seamlessly throughout the movie while keeping the storyline and plot in tact. She also reminds me so much of my friend Geordan throughout this movie, their resemblance once she cuts her hair is uncanny!
Definitely a movie I would see again, and seeing how I just walked in for the free, I would definitely pay to see it this time lol.
