Cyntoia Brown is Coming Home!
Cyntoia Brown has been Granted Clemency by Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam!
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The Tennessee governor’s decision to grant clemency to a woman who killed a man when she was 16 had the potential to pit political interests against widespread support for her cause. Yet the governor says the decision came down to doing the “right thing.”
Outgoing Republican Gov. Bill Haslam on Monday quietly issued his decision on Cyntoia Brown, who says she was a sex-trafficking victim. However, the news quickly spread, thrilling criminal justice advocates, celebrities and other supporters who had been fighting for years to help Brown, 30. -via wtop.com
With everyone in a frenzy over the recent airing of #SurvivingRKelly I can’t help but wonder if that had anything to do with the decision to grant Cyntoia Brown Clemency after serving 15 years. Granted she did kill a man in his sleep at the age of 16, but in the same breath that people are questioning the clemency ruling, they want R kelly in jail or dead for doing the exact same abuse that Brown had been subjected to in her teens. Its a weird take on the matter because who’s to say whether she was right or wrong in killing a man 3 times her age paying her for sex (statutory rape), or if she was coerced by her abusive boyfriend who was abusing and pimping her into sex trafficking. Regardless of all that she just sat in a state pen for 15 years and is finally getting out of her negative situation. She will be freed August 7th 2019, and will be placed on a extremely lengthy 10 year parole. I am going to continue to promote and uplift this young woman because I too believe #BlackGirlsMatter and sex trafficking is wrong, and our judicial system is flawed.
Cyntoia Brown embodies my whole G.O.O.N.S. movement and in no way am I using this woman’s hardships to promote my brand but the total opposite, Im using my brand to spread awareness to my community so they know of the struggles our people go through and situations we make it out of.
