Ghetto Until Proven Fashionable
Moschino’s Pre Fall 2020 show was satire at its best. But that’s what Creative Director Jeremey Scott has always been known for. That being as it may, where as a culture do we draw the line of mockery and a clear admiration for what Black Culture has brought forth to fashion and mainstream media. The exaggeration of styles that the black community created decades ago, now getting rave reviews as fashion show props and over priced by “Brand Name” labels.
At the end of the day we are the “new”, the “whats hot”, the trendsetters! As much as they take away from our culture we create new trends and new opportunities to steal from our culture twice as fast. Who’s the real genius the person who creates the trend in the first place or the person smart enough to market it to the masses? Somehow there needs to be a black person in both of those positions and not these culture vultures. Although a part of me thinks it’s dope seeing our culture blown up (literally) and on the fashion scene but a part of me wants to know why?
Why can Moschino a gigantic name in the fashion world take from something deemed ghetto until now and profit off of it? And then I wonder if a brand like Pyer Moss could pull it off and if the powers that be in the fashion world would receive it as well as Moschino‘s line? Door knocker ear rings, Dookie chains, name plates, braided hair and finger waves, Giant lighters, Bookbags, Fitted caps, and purses, all in a subway setting, far as hell from the Italian fashion house’s roots. It’s amazing and also amazingly off putting. Check out the highlight clip from the show by Jeffrey Thomson.
